Preguntas frecuentes

He encontrado un fallo. ¿Qué te mando?

Escribe a kotej@alexandre-vazquez.com con:

  • tu versión de macOS (menú Apple → Acerca de este Mac) o, en la web, el navegador;
  • la versión de Kotej (menú Kotej → Acerca de Kotej);
  • los pasos para reproducirlo: qué comparabas (carpetas, un JAR, dos JSON…), qué hiciste, qué esperabas y qué pasó;

Frequently asked questions

"Compare with Kotej" doesn't show up in the Finder menu

The Finder extension ships with the app, but macOS keeps it off until you turn it on: open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Finder Extensions and enable Kotej. If it isn't listed, open Kotej once and look again.

Then, in the Finder, select two items and choose Compare the 2 items with Kotej; or select one, choose Select for comparison, then Compare with… on the other.

Which files does it open as folders?

ZIP, JAR, EAR, WAR, AAR and IPA, plus any file that is a ZIP inside whatever its extension. They browse like folders, nested too: an EAR inside a JAR, with more JARs inside it. Two identical entries are recognised from the CRC in the ZIP index, without unpacking them.

What is semantic mode for JSON and XML?

It compares what a document means, not how it is written. In JSON, key order, indentation and whitespace don't matter; the order of array items does. In XML, attribute order, insignificant whitespace and the order of repeated sibling elements (a list of <entry>) don't matter. When the content is equivalent, the file shows as equivalent rather than different. Automatic uses it only for JSON and XML; you can force Byte for byte or Text when you need to.

Is anything uploaded to a server?

No. The macOS app has no network entitlement, and the web version compares files in your browser with no backend. Nothing you compare leaves your machine. The details are in the privacy policy.

I found a bug. What should I send?

Write to kotej@alexandre-vazquez.com with:

  • your macOS version (Apple menu → About This Mac) or, on the web, your browser;
  • the Kotej version (Kotej → About Kotej);
  • the steps to reproduce it: what you were comparing (folders, a JAR, two JSON files…), what you did, what you expected and what happened;
  • a screenshot, if it helps.

You don't need to send your files; if the bug depends on them, I'll ask for a minimal example you're able to share.
